Fred Topham’s VC

Gord Gosse has asked me to post the following. It is a good cause, do what you can to help out…

Come on guys. There’s a VC for sale that we should take an interest in. Fred Topham’s VC is going on the block by his “estate” (read for those whose only interest is money) for 275K. If we don’t raise sufficient funds to purchase this and leave it with the National Museum, it will end up in the hands of an offshore interest. As one of the last VC’s presented to a Canadian we should do our best to make sure it stays in Canada. We, the Airborne, have been kicked from ******* to kettle for years by the public and the politicans. Surely the least we can do is spit in the face of these people and say “This is one piece of Airborne History you won’t get you hands on or won’t spoil”. If all the guys who served with the Airborne gave 20 or 30 dollars we could keep the medal in our own Country and prove to those that we care about our heritage. Get in contact with the Airborne Social Club in Edmonton or the QOR of C in Toronto to find our how you can donate. Come on let’s give the *******s one final shove out the door!!!

I could not agree more. Our history is at stake, we have to stand together, as we were trained to do, to keep the most precious of momentos a soldier could have in its rightful place. Of all the factors that contribute to success in battle the spirit of the warrior is the most decisive. Fred Topham exemplified these words and his legacy should stand for all Canadians to see.

I spoke to the wife and will be sending a check although I have no association with the Airborne. I do find it my duty as a Canadian to help if I can and encourage others to as well.

It would be nice if the QOR page had a weekly or daily update of money collected (Thermometer style or something) to help motivate others to donate when they see how short they are and to show people who contributed that they are making a difference.

Maybe that tip can be passed to Mr. Gosse some how??

current serving member with the 3rd battalion RCR. just to inform you we too are collecting money within the battalion. wondering if this is a common goal amungst us. that is to say is the money raised between us going to be combined to buy back the VC a Canadian Paratrooper earned. (ironic). Either way, let’s keep what is ours, ours.

    AIRBORNE!

  4. Gentlemen:

I wish we could give regular progress updates but we are a small (very determined) group and the majority of us are working full time jobs in addition to fundraising. I have taken a break from logging donations to post this message. The Chairman hopes to post another update this week at http://www.qor.com, please keep your eye on that website. As always, Jan de Vries (1 Can Para) will be trying to spread the word through the media.

The donations keep coming in from near (Canada) and far (Afghanistan – Op Athena), and we are confident that the VC will remain in Canada.

Please do keep spreading the word, we need all the help we can get.

    To donate:

Cheques or money orders should be made out to:
1st Canadian Parachute Battalion Museum Trust (short form – 1st Can Para Bn Museum Trust)

    Mail to:
The Cpl. Fred Topham VC Fundraising Project
c/o The Queen’s Own Rifles of Canada
    130 Queen Street, East
    Toronto ON M5A 1R9.

Tax receipts will be issued for donations over $ 20.00, we will start issuing receipts shortly.

    Sincerely,

    Kim Mathieson
