Mike became the 83rd Canadian Soldier to die in Afghanistan when he died last Tuesday in southern Afghanistan when his patrol was ambushed.

His family issued a statement saying: “Mike loved being a paramedic with Calgary EMS and loved being a soldier in the Canadian Forces, especially his time in the Canadian Airborne Regiment.”

“Michael died doing what he loved. In his heart, he was a soldier and in his blood, a paramedic. But soldiering wasn’t the only thing that Mike gave his heart to. He gave his heart and soul to his wife, parents, family and friends.”

Mike was a former member of 2 Commando, serving from 1991 to 1995. He left the military to become a Paramedic in Calgary where he grew up. He served as a reservist with 15 Field Ambulance and was on his second tour of Afghanistan when he died.

Each coin has a registration number with the Canadian Airborne Regiment hat badge on one side and the ExCoelis on the other. Click on the image to see a larger image showing both sides of the coin.

The coins are $20 each, plus shipping and handling. If you would like to order a coin, please download an order form, fill it out and send it in to the kitshop.

The 40th Anniversary Commemorative coin is a serialized coin from 001 to 300. The kitshop does not have blanks in which to engrave the same number that a person had on his original Canadian Airborne Regiment challenge coin. Commemorative items have their own serialized sequence of numbers. The numbering of the commemorative coins work on the same principle as prints or other limited edition items.

The Airborne Kitshop is run by the Airborne Regiment Association and has no affiliation with this site. Offers by the kitshop and the Association are only posted here to get the word out to as many people as possible.

With Christmas fast approaching, what better time to introduce you to a new project in support of our military families. As you all know, military wives and mothers have always kept the home fires burning. More than ever in recent times, military families are called upon to be strong in the face of constant stresses and worries. To acknowledge the unfailing supportive role our Canadian military spouses play is this ever-challenging lifestyle, Dianne Collier has formed a committee made up of representatives of various groups within Petawawa to fundraise and erect a granite, eternal flame monument at CFB Petawawa. This project has been approved by the Base Commander, and they are busy getting the word out about this much-anticipated project.

To learn more about how you can participate in this project, and what the project is all about, please visit their web site, The Camouflage Rose and click on Help Light The Flame of Hope page to reach the Eternal Flame pages.
