FAQ Page Added

We get tons of emails for the site and it gets hard to answer them all at times. Many of the emails are the same questions, so to make things a bit easier, I have added a Frequently Asked Questions page to the site. If you can think of any questions that should be added, please feel free to submit them.

The Airborne Social Club of Edmonton will be hosting the 40th anniversary reunion (Western) of the Canadian Airborne Regiment during the period of 19-21 June 2008. The theme of the reunion will be

‘AIRBORNE FORTY YEARS LATER’

The Regiment has always enjoyed a special relationship with the city of Edmonton therefore, it would be befitting to once again relive and highlight those early years and at the same time honoring the full four decades that has passed since the formation of one of Canada’s finest Regiments.

Since the Regiment was removed from the order of battle under sensitive circumstances in 1995, it is incumbent on all of us to stay focused on the positive contributions that the Regiment made during its active years, especially, while it was garrisoned in Edmonton from 1968 to 1976. It was here that the Regiment was the proud recipient of its first Freedom of the City honors in 1976.

The members of the Airborne Social Club are hard at work to make this event an unforgettable venue. As the theme indicates the emphasis will be to celebrate the 40 years that have passed since the formation of the Regiment. Most if not all of the “originals” have passed or knocking on the doors of sixty years of life in the fast lane so come on out and enjoy the camaraderie of the AIRBORNE FAMILY.

It is understood that the Canadian Airborne Regiment Association (ARAC) is also planning a reunion most likely in the Petawawa area around the same time. Having a reunion in two locales will only enhance the celebration in that those who wish to take in both may do so. Those who cannot travel the great distances from the East to West may attend in their half of the country. Dates have been coordinated with ARAC to eliminate any conflict of dates.

Early details of the program are as follows:

19 June 2008

  • Pre-registration and happy hour

20 June 2008

  • Registration
  • Sky Hawk demonstration
  • Meet and Greet
  • BBQ
  • Evening entertainment and dance

21 June 20008

  • Mass Para Drop
  • Formal Parade
  • Dinner
  • Entertainment and Dance

We are looking forward to host all past members of the Regiment, members who were in support roles, current members of the regular force parachute companies, past and current members of the Canadian Parachute Centre and aircrews who provided airlift during the past forty years.

Six Fallen Brothers

Today, our thoughts and our prayers go out to the families, friends and comrades of six more of our brothers who died in combat in Afghanistan yesterday. They, along with their interpreter, were killed when their vehicle struck a roadside bomb in the Panjwaii district about 20km southwest of Kandahar.

The explosion happened as the soldiers were returning from a forward operations base after conducting a cordon and search operation of an Afghan village in a joint operation with the Afghan National Army.

Two names are being withheld at the request of the families. The other four are;

  • Capt. Jefferson Francis, 37, RCHA
  • Capt. Matthew Dawe, 27, PPCLI
  • Cpl. Jordan Anderson, 25, PPCLI
  • Cpl. Cole Bartsch, 23, PPCLI
  • Pte. Lane Watkins, 20, PPCLI
  • MCpl. Colin Bason, 28, Royal Westminster Regiment.

These latest casualties bring the toll to 66 Canadian soldiers and one diplomat killed in Afghanistan since the beginning of the mission in 2002. All of these brave soldiers have our respect, gratitude and support.

Update: The names of the remaining two soldiers have been released and added to the list above.

New Site Design

If you’ve been here before, you’ll quickly notice that I have radically redesigned the site. It used to be that the site was created using MoveableType, but the install was outdated and it wasn’t very easy to upgrade. I use Wordpress for most of my other sites and it makes it so much easier to maintain the site and keep it up to date.

You may have noticed the lack of updates recently. I have been working hard in the background to redesign the site and move everything over to the new system. I hope that this makes the site easier to read and a little bit more pleasing to the eye. It definitely makes it much easier for me to update most of the pages, so hopefully I can now catch up on the site updates in my inbox and keep the site fresh in the future.

I hope you like the new site. You may notice a few pages here and there that still don’t fit in with the new design. I am reworking the pages as I get time and as soon as I am done, I will start putting up more new content.

Another great thing you will notice is that I have re-enabled commenting on posts and even on some pages, so tell the world what you think!
